If you've managed to find your way here, then you're most welcome.
So what's the gig?
The Musical Box is my weekly radio show, two hours of top tuneage with a fab mix of songs old, new, borrowed and blues.
You can catch it on 92.3 Forest FM in East Dorset/West Hampshire - and around the globe courtesy of Radio Player - right here in fact: http://www.forestfm.co.uk/radioplayer/console/
You'll need to reserve Thursday nights between 10pm and Midnight to ensure you can join in and benefit from the wide range of sounds that I feature, many of them recommended by our growing band of listeners. Of course, the show doesn't usually include stuff you can hear on daytime radio, so we look out for fascinating and interesting sounds from right across the spectrum.
The only prerequisite is that you and I love great music and want to get that message spread far and wide.
This past week has seen the show reach its 300th edition. I reckon that's over 600 hours of transmissions and some 8700 tracks: plus the various one-off specials we do - this year alone, we've seen "40 Years of Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick", "The Musical Box Mission To Mars" and "Planes, Trains & Automobiles" - and we're lining something up a bit special for Christmas and the New Year. But, you can always suggest others too.
".....an hour long special with space-age clips from across the years to celebrate the latest NASA mission to Mars. Music, movies, radio, comedy - all linked together in an imaginary musical journey to the mysterious red planet."
"...pretty damn hot stuff!"
"...H G Wells to Orson Welles in one hour..."
"...Wow!..."
Weekly Play List
You can check out the weekly playlist right here: http://www.facebook.com/alan.dorey.1, plus plenty of other music-related items, listener postings and all the usual gubbins you'd expect from a dynamic show like The Musical Box.
Here's last Thursday's 300th edition listing:
All good sounds, eh readers?
Facebook gives the show a day-to-day immediacy, but to augment the fevered scribblings thereon, I felt that we needed somewhere to go where there's a bit more room, some space to breathe and better consider the ways of the musical world. And that's how this blog came to be, a (growing) repository of words and images, facts and comment - plus, the occasional extended piece too.
The brief isn't just limited to me or my tastes. Or even matters relating to the show. We can talk gigs, bands and artists, history, changes, what's hot and what's not, radio, books, movies, TV, musicians, promoters, engineers and producers, instruments, fashions, memories, the future, formats - and just about anything else.
What Now?
The move has been made, the set-up's here - and it's down to me now to create collections of words you'll want to read.
For those involved in this writing business - or even in publishing - frequency promises are a massive lump of coiled rope, ready to hang the unsuspecting author as deadlines loom and pass by. But, a weekly production at the very least is the aim. The rest, as they say, is down to you.
"We split up due to musical differences: our lead singer was musical - we were *different*"
